I think its neat that the cougar traveled so far, but the story continues in the media as people are raising a stink because the cougar was shot.

It explains why they chose to shoot rather than tranquilize.

It would take 5 minutes for the sedative to take effect. During that 5 minutes you would have 100 pounds of hurt enraged cat in our second largest city.

In a residential area they wouldn't be able to track it, so when the sedative took effect chances are good they wouldn't find it.

Another point for consideration is that its not exactly normal for mountain lions to hang out in the city. If he came into the city to hunt domestic pets chances are good theres something wrong with him.

It was a SERM officer that put the cat down, thats our conservation officer. I'm pretty sure he weighed all the options. I would guess that shooting a gun within city limits was a last resort.
