Chances are I'm going to buy dw a digital camera for christmas.
As the only thing I hate worse than taking pictures, is having my picture took, I know nothing about cameras.
I would appreciate any and all advise you would pass on.
If I go to a camera store am I just going to pay twice as much as I would at a department store with no real difference?
i think you'd get a better deal at a camera store (not necessarily cheaper - i mean imo they know more about cameras) department store people (i.e. mall people) don't know crap...

Kim is right, but if you do some research on your own, you can get a better price online, or in a Big Box store.
Look at dpreview.com

Stay clear of Ritz.........Overpriced despite their claims of lowest price. I saved $1500 on one lense (not to mention sales tax) by shopping online.

Doofy, I'm rather stupid when it comes to cameras, but I did a lot of research on the reliability, features and quality of different brands and types (I wanted a manual, not an automatic, so to speak).
Finally I chose an Olympus. It was more difficult to use, but I studied hard. I looked for the cheapest price, but with the best return policy, and it turned out to be Amazon at that time. So that's where I bought it.
I think now that I should have paid more and gone to a camera speciality store. There would have been more support and I think they would have helped me to learn faster. JMO.
