Gunman Dies in Gun Battle with DPS Near Kingman
May 26th, 2005 @ 7:01pm

A man who led DPS officers on a wild overnight crime spree across northwestern Arizona is dead.
The suspect fired on officers at Hoover Dam. When DPS attempted to arrest him in Kingman, he commandiered a patrol car and later, two other vehicles. The pursuit moved south on State Route 93 for more than 100 miles. It all came to an end east of Kingman.

After a DPS officer rammed the car twice, Valenzuela said, the suspect exited the vehicle and pointed a gun he had taken from the DPS cruiser at police, Valenzuela said.

"At that point in time, there was an exchange of gunfire," said Frank Valenzuela with DPS. "The male suspect was struck several times by DPS officers. He was transported to Kingman Regional Medical Center by a ground ambulance where he has since expired."

Amerika Gonzales, 24, the female passenger in the suspect's vehicle, who was thought to possibly have been a hostage, was hurt and taken to Kingman Regional Medical Center.

Valenzuela says she was taken to the hospital after complaining of respiratory problems, Valenzuela said. Kingman police arrested her at the hospital after discovering she had outstanding felony warrants.

Gonzales has not been charged for the pursuit, although she probably was not being held against her will, Valenzuela said.

Phoenix police say one of the cars the suspected used in the incident, was carjacked from a victim Wednesday night near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road.

The victim was shot and is in stable condition at a Valley hospital

Kingman has always been a sleepy northern Arizona mining city and a convenient place to stop for gas on the way to Las Vegas.

It gained unwanted notoriety 10 years ago when it was discovered that Timothy McVeigh lived in Kingman shortly before the Oklahoma City bombing.

"Certainly it's something we all want to remember to prevent something like that from ever happening again, but that certainly is not Kingman's legacy," Mayor Monica Gates said. "We are trying to become known as the heart of Route 66."

She said the key to marketing Kingman will be to get the word out about the still affordable housing, cooler summer temperatures, clean air and light traffic.

Kingman is sure getting some bad publicity lately. They should just market it as the last stop before Vegas. :)
