In case you haven't seen this, it's <a href="http://www.campusug.com/video/southparkjoke.wmv" target="_blank">Trey Parker and Matt Stone's version</a> of the comedian's joke, from the film <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436078/" target="_blank">The Aristocrats</a>. (I do hope the IMDB link is permitted!)

The point of the joke, and the film, may be freedom of expression, or self-censorship, or what happens among professional comedians behind closed doors. But for practical purposes, the joke is so absurdly obscene that the viewer is shocked into hilarity, or deep offense. Or possibly both. The conundrum for those marketing the film is encapsulated in its tagline: "No nudity. No violence. Unspeakable obscenity."

It’s a joke told mainly within stand-up circles, from comic to comic, rarely told in public, partly because of a “secret handshake” thing that knowing the joke allows, but mainly because it’s so dirty, so raunchy, so indescribably filthy, that to tell it in public would simply often not be allowed - especially in the vaudeville days, where the joke originated.

The joke

The joke has three parts:

1. The setup: the joke always begins with a "family act" going in to see a talent agent. There are always the parents "mom & dad" and usually a son, daughter and dog. Sometimes there is a baby in lieu of the dog or one of the "older" kids.

2. The act is described. By tradition, the description is crude, tasteless, often ribald, often scatological, and as beyond the boundaries of propriety as the comedian can muster. Incest and beastiality are common themes in many versions.

3. The punchline: the agent asks what this act is called, and the answer is always the same: "The Aristocrats!" In modern tellings this may not actually be a punchline, just an ending.

Warning

This site contains variations on a single joke.

A joke that is designed to offend.

That is intentionally told with explicit language, sex, violence and disturbing imagery to see which teller can top the other.

If you are faint of heart, you should leave now. If you aren't, you will be. You will be.
