The first poll asking about demographics raised eyebrows.

How about these?

Education Level Poll

Please tells us "What is your Education Level". We need you to be as honest as possible and please do not vote with inaccurate data. The results of this poll will help us determine how to proceed with some of our ideas. It will also help our advertisers determine what type of ads to place on the site and how much to pay RuneHQ for the advertising. Your support is greatly appreciated in this and other polls on the site, you are helping us out by taking the time to answer these important topics with desired data needed for decisions about the future of the company and your entertainment.

Thanks,

Current answers:

Current/Future High School = 692
HS Degree or Equivalent = 73
2-yr College = 71
4-yr College = 62
Grad/Masters = 56
Ph.D. = 37

Annual Household Income Poll

Please tells us "what is the average annual income of your household".

By household, I mean ALL persons living in your house that bring money into the house. This is your entire family, not just you and your paper route or job at McDonalds. If you live at home with Mom and Dad, we want their income also.

THIS POLL IS NOT MANDATORY! You do not have to vote if this information is considered an invasion of your privacy. If you are under 18, please ask your parents permission before voting.

Also the results are anonymous. We do not know how you voted. It just tallies the number and the fact that you voted.

We are only asking this data on behalf of our advertiser to ascertain details about income levels of our visitors.

We are extremely sorry if anyone disagree's with this poll. We never said voting was mandatory and we understand if you choose not to participate in the poll. We also recommend fully that you inform your parents about this if you are underage and think this is not appropriate. We do not want anyone to feel we are trying to pry into your personal lives. As I said the results are anonymous, it is just statistical data used by the people that pay for our site costs and advertisers.

There is something that has slipped between the cracks in all the dicussions of scott and ethical and the sell-thru manipulator, that just jumps out in these on-going "demographic" polls at runequest....think just TWO words::

DATA HARVESTING !

He may like to talk about his "morning wood" to 13 & 14 year olds, and have a penchant for large piles of Beanie Babies.....but if I was playing the odds maker.....something tells me that what REALLY makes him twitch & get his toes to curl is when he oh soooo innocently gets any group to start regurgitating data to him.

That's the real runequest "gold" to him.

So, 37 Ph.D's are playing a game with 692 high school students? That's just not a very comforting thought for me.

LOL! The 10 year olds are answering the "household income poll" based on how much RUNESCAPE GOLD they are making while playing the game!

LOL!

What a shithead. Where are the net cops? Surely someone should get a slap on the wrist for even asking such a thing from kids.

My only consolation is they ARE mostly kids so a number of them will answer wrong. I know my kids have no clue what DH & I bring in and I plan on keeping it that way. I hope a bunch of kids ask their parents their income, and the parents are bright enough for it to set off alarm bells.

Ooooooooooooooooooooh I wish somebody would cut off Scott's __________

I can see it now...

"Uh, Mom?"

"Yes, dear?"

"How much money do you and Daddy make?"

"Why do you ask? Who wants to know?"

Fill in the rest yourself!

Emily made a good point ...

So I ask, what good is this "data" when it's surely inflated, invented, indirect, imaginary, improper, inaccurate, incorrect, inexact, invalid and ...

skewed?? :D

It sounds like they are collecting statistics to offer advertisers. As long as they make a reasonable attempt to collect valid data, they can report whatever data they do collect in order to target advertising to their site.

Thanks for the links Bobby....that second one that exposes the thread topics is VERY interesting if you just skim thru some of them.

I especially liked scott's comments in the 'trading' thread where he is also gets lauded for his ideas about eBay too:

Thanks a MILLION!

Scott

Yeah right....

"thanks for letting me come here and werk the kids for a way to game the eBay affiliate program *FOR* a million" might be a little more accurate!

from one of the more arrogant postings on the forum where they are scolding all the kids who ask to moderate. it has that "we are just too popular and fabulous to be bothered with you little people" tone.

To be an Admin you must be older than 18. Sorry but 95% of teenagers are too unstable and not trustworthy enough to handle the job of being an admin.

How stupid do you think we are around here? We don't know you and just because you ask, we are going to immediately make you a mod?

http://runehq.com/RHQInn/index.php?showtopic=42711

i guess they think their members are stupid and immature to be addressed with respect but still smart enough to have their brains sucked for data.

Sorry but 95% of teenagers are too unstable and not trustworthy enough to handle the job of being an admin. What a jerk! Why couldn't he just leave it at "you have to be 18" instead of insulting 95% of the 692 teens there.

Speaking of unstable... :2gamecock

And if you don't live at home with Mom and Dad, what's your address?

D'oh!!! :1crazy2: :1fuck2:

All of those questions are creepy an just brimming with smutty duality. If he's gathering data to sell - gross! If he's gathering data to find new programmers for his "Shrewd" company -- gross! If he's gathering data for creepier purposes -- even grosser!
