For me, the jackals are anyone who doesn't have issue with a poster until someone else has issue with that poster. I.e. too cowardly to say something in email, too cowardly to approach on the boards, but once someone else steps up and says something, they find their balls and start posting also.

So the jackals aren't "The Jackals," as in anything fixed. Not an exact group of posters. They're the hangers on - like real life. Not much on their own, but they're good at helping pick the carcass clean once it's started.

Disclaimer: my explanation is only meant to explain to Cit what I mean when I say jackal. It doesn't imply a community use of the word, nor does it imply that every poster in this thread is a jackal. (Jeez, I hope that covered my bases.)

By Sadie's definition, I am one of the Jackals - and the most prominent in this particular case. In a bored moment I pulled up the last page of a thread that I had not been reading (I do this occassionally with long threads at TRB), read Julesy's comments and went to find what she was responding to. Sadie does not know that I had not read the rest of the thread prior (and by her definition that is not relevant), and I (a) referenced Julesy's post when I first commented, and (b) had not entered the thread until after Julesy had made an attack. Thus the perception would appear to be that I was picking the bones clean, even though I really do take issue the language and concepts used. I have certainly not had an issue with Zilvy prior to seeing her use such concepts and language.

Similarly, in the other example that I cited as "hate language" I only responded after Sadie had and acknowledged her comments at the time.

It is nice to be considered scum for taking a stance against violence on women, or racist/hate language. I guess this answers questions I raised in the seperate thread.

My reference to jackals was mostly about fairly new people who seem to be relish nothing more than attacking w/out any awareness as to history, etc.

I was trying to do was support Zilvy because it seemed that once she and Kevin started having words, a lot of people seemed to club her. When she posted her apology and then still got tweaked, it pissed me off. That's it.

Had I known that a post of support would have started a shit storm, I'd have posted my support in email. :(

Basically, you are encouraging others to eat up a website's bandwidth without the morals to link to the page it was intended to be used on. What is even more morally wrong is when someone doesn't give the source of that file any credit when deep linking. Such as was done in this <a href="http://www.otwa.com/community/showpost.php?p=252890" target="_new">OTWA</a> post by disguising the link as "Not for the Squeamish" ...thus making one think that the poster of that link had full rights to the file.
