It's quite apparent that this administration cares very little about the poor people themselves, begging for help; food, water, shelter and safety; medical care and just plain competence and leadership. Instead, we have Bush, finally cutting his vacation 'short' after a few rounds of golf and a fundraiser (after the hurricane had come and gone), finally stopping by the disaster area, after public outrage became apparent at his complete lack of leadership and aid, on the heels of what seriously was one of the most inappropriate and out - of - touch speeches of his presidency. And now I can only wonder if the scenes we see in New Orleans were reminiscent of what happened in Baghdad minus the flood and hurricane (substitute "U.S. invasion" as the disaster in place of "natural" disaster).
And the lousy speeches Bush has given so far have revealed that human suffering apparently is quite low on his radar if even there at all. All he speaks of is rebuiding and fuel and the economy. Obviously all critical issues; but he doesn't seem to be either aware that 1. people died while he sat in his arse for half a week and 2. he's the president, and the 'unacceptable response' he mentioned is his own.

I guess the President was expected to ferry people from the disaster in Marine One?
Bush can't win no matter what he does.
During Camille he was there in 48-hours and everyone screamed that his huge entourage was in the way and that he was hindering relief. "Get out of the way", the Buffalo's of that day screamed!
The four states hit by this disaster have a combined 4-billion dollars of federal money - supposedly in a bank somewhere - to be used for emergencies just like this.
Where is that money?
The idea behind allocating this money was to be able to fund local relief immediately while waiting for federal dollars to be approved - which typically takes a few days to a week.
Unless Bush was expected to go help stack sand-bags (or something) there was really nothing for him to do. There are VETERAN service personal in place that are much more experienced at these jobs and I doubt that the heads of the National Guard, FEMA, or the Coast Guard would have appreciated having the President standing over their shoulders yelling at them to move faster.
If President Bush had micro-managed everything from the beginning - he would have been criticized for that as well and anti-American detractors like Buffalo would have torn him down exactly the same way.

You are as full of excrement as a Christmas elephant. You obviously don't know what you're talking about. Again, go on down to New Orleans and make these speeches and see how long you stay healthy. Oh, I forgot to add, you are a mean-spirted coward as well. All those people caught up in what has been called one the greatest natural disasters in our country's history and all you can do is think to criticize Black people. Not one word of compassion or concern for you for anybody down there. You can't afford sympathy, it might make your president look bad.....

Typical ... when they have no coherent argument, they just crack jokes.
What Bush could have done is end his vacation as soon as they knew the hurricane had turned toward New Orleans. He could have mobilized enough National Guard and regular troops THEN, so they could move directly into that area from nearby after the hurricane passed.
He could have ordered FEMA to allow the Red Cross into New Orleans to provide food and water and save untold lives AFTER the flooding.
Instead, the day the hurricane hit, he was out stumping for his baby medicare project. The day New Orleans went under water, he was publicly patting himself on the back for his dirty little war. He was so fucking worried about his popularity rating, he couldn't be concerned with preventing the death of American citizens.
"Your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore. They're already overcrowded from your dirty little war."

Bush can't win no matter what he does.
On the contrary, he won because of what was done on election day.

One here who Loves Kanye West, he's a masterful record producer and a ground-breaking hip-hop artist.
Who else would've sampled Ray Charles 1954 tune, I Got A Woman (his first commercial hit), for a 2005 remix?

Honestly I think it has nothing to do with race. I really don't. I think it's economic class that no one cares about. The poor..be they black, white, hispanic, asian or green. They all get swept under the rug.

Well, oddy, I'd go along with that .. except for one thing ...
This is the south we're talking about .. and I'm sorry, but I live on the northern fringe of the south here ... have seen and heard dispicably racist things - stuff that blew my northern mind for sure ...
So I'm truly not so sure that you're right, except in theory ... the reality may lie somewhere in between ...
racism is a manifestation of classism - hand in hand...

The spin is beginning. It's the Mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Louisiana's fault that the tragedy had occured after the hurricane, if you listen to the hate mongrols that would rather laugh over dead bodies than see their president criticized.
The Neocons lie while people die.

It would have been nice if our troops were here, at the ready, instead of in Iraq fighting a war that was begun by a bunch of lies and misinformation. But then, when Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda attacked us - it gave Bush just the excuse he needed to finish what his Daddy started! We aren't fighting those who attacked us.
And sadly, the worst thing you can be in this country is poor and minority. Funny how so many of the the poor join our armed forces as a way to try and work their way out of poverty.
EVERY US citizen is entitled to immediate help in a disaster, no matter what their class or race.

Of course they'll spin it. It's all the black mayor's fault. it's all the democratic Governor's fault. It's the poor people's fault for not having transportation and money.
The latest spin is that the governor turned down a federal takeover of her state, so of course it's her fault.
I saw Bush speaking to some FEMA workers earlier, telling them "I hope you feel proud of what you're doing." Only a selfish asshole would feel PRIDE at a time like this. That would be Bush, the fucktard moron.
And idiots will continue to believe him. And bigmouth white bread preachers will continue to preach HIS (Bush's) word, instead of the word they should be preaching, which goes something like: Whatsoever thou doest to the lesser of us all, thou doest to me.

Don't forget, Sandy, that the Democratic governor is also female. Two strikes against her right there. The fact she's got a brain and not afraid to use it puts her in the OUT category of this joke of an administration.
I tend to agree with the idea that this is less about race than it is economics. The middle class no longer really exists - people either have, or they don't. In New Orleans, most of those who don't have were black, so that's what we're seeing. The white poor were left behind as well.
That said, racism is still alive and well in this country. I hear things even up here in Wisconsin from some of these rednecks that make me want to bitch-slap them into next year. I know it's hard to believe, but I'm not known for sitting meekly in the face of bullshit...so it's yet another reason people up here view me with, at best, suspicion, and at worst, flat out hatred.

That said, racism is still alive and well in this country. It certainly is!
I got bombarded with it while standing in line at Kmart several months ago. The people in front of me, a Mexican family, were talking quietly while being checked out. The woman behind me, a white woman, started a diatribe about Mexicans not speaking English, and how they shouldn't be allowed to live here unless they do, and how they're taking all the jobs away.
I could easily have blistered that woman's ears, but I just refused to even look at her or change her monologue into a dialogue, even though she tried very hard to engage me. I was very tired at the time, but I remember hoping that the Mexican family couldn't understand what she was saying. In retrospect, I wish I had spoken up, even though I probably wouldn't have changed her mind. I could have embarrassed the hell out of her, though, and I should have.
