New Orleans police chief Eddie Compass said last night: "We don't have any substantiated rapes. We will investigate if the individuals come forward.".

So, it was likely just another smokescreen to justify their excuse that "We couldn't get in there because we were afraid for our lives!!!"

Just like any city, there are criminals. When the cat's away, the mice will play. It's obvious to anyone except the blind that the vast majority of those American citizens needed and wanted help, and many, many died while waiting for it.

Hats off to the media who didn't let anything stand in their way.

Reports of dozens of rapes at both facilities — many allegedly involving small children — may forever remain a question mark. Rape is a notoriously underreported crime under ideal circumstances, and tracking down evidence at this point, with evacuees spread all over the country, will be nearly impossible. The same goes for reports of armed robberies at both sites.

While numerous people told The Times-Picayune that they had witnessed rapes, in particular the rape of two young girls in the Superdome ladies' room and the killing of one of them, police and military officials say they know nothing of such an incident.

So the only "reports" that have been made, have been made to the media? Why aren't these witnesses who are talking to the media down there, talking to the police as well?

It seems to me that if a young girl was killed in the commission of a rape, they should have her body and plenty of evidence to start an investigation.

It's interesting since the people who came out of the superdome HAVE said this stuff went on, and the reporters that were there during the time have said they had seen people killed and heard all the shots fired.
