"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said. "We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with." -- Pat Robertson

"If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson told viewers on his "The 700 Club" show Monday. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war." -- Pat Robertson

Ah - the Inquisition poster boy has spoken. The continued existance of and fortunes of such people may be the biggest proof that there is no God.

Brilliant idea!! Meanwhile, Chavez's popularity at home just shot up to record levels.
Chavez is no friend either of terrorists or Fidel (Gawd, imagine someone still worrying about Cuba "exporting revolution, what a quaint idea!!). Mainly, he's a friend of himself. He loves hearing applause. He'd probably be gone already if the US hadn't been so utterly ham-handed in the abortive coup attempt 2-3 years ago. Chavez has been dining out ever since on the US's overeager show when Chavez was briefly deposed -- whether we were involved in the original plot or not (ambiguous), we were too visibly happy that he was gone and too eager to recognize his wannabe replacement.
That was yet another excellent example of the utter hypocrisy of this President's foreign policy. When we claim to favor Democracy in every country worldwide, what we mean is ".... as long as your free elections elect the guy we want." As we did in Guatemala in 1954, as we did in Iran in the early 50s, as we did in Greece in the late 60s, as we did repeatedly in Mexico and other Latin American countries in the early 20th century, we have a long tradition of throwing out other nations' freely chosen leaders simply because we didn't like something about them. We're still paying for it in Greece and Iran and Guatemala and there's every likelihood that our screwing around with Chavez will eventually unleash another wave of anti-Americanism.
I wonder what Robertson's scriptural basis for wanting him bumped off is. Or does he not even pretend to be a religious man anymore?

Robertson Apologizes for Calling for Chavez Assassination
The Associated Press
Published: Aug 24, 2005
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson apologized Wednesday for calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, only hours after he denied saying Chavez should be killed.
"Is it right to call for assassination?" Robertson said. "No, and I apologize for that statement. I spoke in frustration that we should accommodate the man who thinks the U.S. is out to kill him."

Chavez, whose country is the world's fifth-largest oil exporter, has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush. He accuses the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.
On Monday's telecast of his Christian Broadcasting Network show "The 700 Club," Robertson had said: "You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war, and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."
He continued: "We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."
On Wednesday, he initially denied having called for Chavez to be killed and said The Associated Press had misinterpreted his remarks.
"I didn't say 'assassination.' I said our special forces should 'take him out,'" Robertson said on his show. "'Take him out' could be a number of things including kidnapping."
He later issued the apology on his Web site.
When the AP had called Robertson on Tuesday for elaboration, spokeswoman Angell Watts said Robertson would not do interviews and had no statement about his remarks. He also declined several interview requests Wednesday.,
On Tuesday, the State Department called Robertson's remarks "inappropriate."

And to think that people actually sent money to him.
Lots of people.
LOTS of money.
Seemingly, there are millions of Americans who think there is a "scriptural view" on deregulation of cable TV, John Roberts' appointment to the Supreme Court, capital gains tax, and bankruptcy protection. Amazingly, according to Robertson, the Scriptures always teach that the rich shall inherit the earth.
Interesting article in this issue of the Atlantic Monthly -- the US of A is the most openly Christian country on the planet by a wide margin but measured by the things Christ preached -- charity, humility, forgiveness, etc. -- one of the worst. Robertson and his ilk advocate Big Brother for peoples' personal lives; a crusading, jingo foreign policy; and an economic policy aimed at "comforting the comfortable" -- policies that appeal to that un-Christian Christian type, and there are millions of them around.

As long as people are not willing to think for themselves- their OWN thoughts- on such matters there will always be extremist religions... in ALL forms.
