I challenge anyone who still has their head in the sand to visit their nearest V.A. hospital. Spend a few hours there, just people-watching.
The Vietnam vets are easy to spot. They have a lost look on their face. Many are heavily medicated because it's the only way they can function. Many have lived for the past 30 years or more with missing limbs, not to mention missing minds.
The latest casualties can't be missed. Men young enough to be my sons with missing legs and/or arms. Dozens of them on any given day. You don't want to see the looks on their faces, but it's our responsibility to see those looks. It's easy to turn away, hoist the flag, and rah rah the fuckers who caused it all. It's not as easy to take a good, long look at the true effects of war.
Those who support Bush and his dirty little war owe it to those men to LOOK at them and SEE them ... especially the fucking cowards who won't go fight themselves, but are more than willing to see others die for Bush's cause. If you're too much of a fucking coward to fight your war, then at the very least have the guts to LOOK at those who have fought it, and paid the price.

...and once upon a very long time ago they were actual human beings...

They've now passed (by a considerable margin) the combat deaths in the Mexican War. That was an actual declared war against another bona fide power. (Can't do an apples to apples comparison of present day deaths to total deaths in past wars, because so many died of disease and virtually everyone who was injured died).
The rates of people with multiple amputations and PTSD from this war are going to be throught the roof. Because so many now wear body armor and medical care is so good, a lot of those injured would have died even as recently as Vietnam. But because of the kind of war this is (lots of high explosives, and another of those "can't tell friend from foe" type perpetual adrenaline highs) the number physically and psychically maimed is out of sight.
I'm actually something of a hawk, when there's actually a cause worth fighting for. Too bad the miserable little puke who sits in the Oval Office hasn't yet been able to articulate a coherent rationale for why we're killing and maiming the best of the younger generation.
