Yeah. My Mom had those in school.

Well. Isn't that nice. At least your Mom had a reasonably normal life until you came along, Ross. Is your Mom's name Rosemary, hmmm? Are you Rosemary's Baby???

Not just a current trend. Actors since the dawn of acting mean those who act, its a gender neutral word. Actress came about later - means 'female actor'.

LOL! She was 16 when I popped out!

So, yeah.

A fairly normal girl in the early 1950's.

LOL! SO my aunts (her younger sisters) are like MY older sisters.

Thanks cat, I'll take all the help i can get dealing with PowerMouth. :butt:

I wrote current since I seem to notice it more and more.
A female actor may be known as an actress, although some prefer the term "actor" because of its gender-neutrality.

(I need a big sloppy tongue emoticon saying "pfffft" here.)

When I was a bartender I hated the term "barmaid", so I can see why actresses want to be actors now.

Don't know anyone well enough to answer Part One yet, don't want to be the first to answer Part Two.......

That choosing a woman on a desert island is harder than it looks. I've been thinking about it........you have to choose someone who wouldn't be whinning/worrying about OTHER people she isn't with the whole time.

That's too much like work. Five questions at a time is about my speed.

I'd pick Survivor Stephenie for the tropical island. She can do all the work while I get a suntan.

We called them "truth books" at my school in the 60's.

Not just a current trend. Actors since the dawn of acting mean those who act, its a gender neutral word. Actress came about later - means 'female actor'.
Here's a link for ya, Sugarpuff LOL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actor

I don't dispute that at some time way in history the sole term was actor, but keep in mind that most all actors were male until the 17th century when women began performing as well - and at that time the word 'actress' was created to apply specifically to them, just as 'actor' applied only to males.

http://encyclopedia.laborlawtalk.com/Actor

In the past, the term "actor" was restricted to men. Women did not begin performing commonly until the 17th century. When they did the term "actress" was used...

...Today, the term "actor" is often used to refer to both men and women, as some consider the term "actress" to be sexist. However, the term actress also remains in common use.

However the return of 'actor' as a gender neutral context is a current and recent trend as noted here:

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=-ess

Usage Note: Many critics have argued that there are sexist connotations in the use of the suffix -ess to indicate a female in words like sculptress, waitress, stewardess, and actress. The heart of the problem lies in the nonparallel use of terms to designate men and women. For example, the -or ending on sculptor seems neutral or unmarked. By comparison, sculptress seems to be marked for gender, implying that the task of sculpting differs as performed by women and men or even that the task should typically be performed by a man. For occupational titles, the use of -ess has been almost completely replaced by recently formed gender-neutral compounds such as flight attendant and letter carrier or by the -er/-or forms. The Usage Panel finds use of the -or suffix to refer to women perfectly acceptable. Ninety-five percent of Panelists approve of sculptor in the sentence The gallery is exhibiting work of sculptor Barbara Hepworth. Sculptress is far less accepted; sixty-five percent reject it in the sentence Georgia O'Keeffe is not as well known as a sculptress as she is as a painter. ·A few words ending in -ess, such as goddess and giantess, have long been established in the literature of religion and mythology and are unlikely to be construed as sexist when used in these contexts.

So I am sure that you can understand why I find it acceptable to continue to use the term actress, just as I now understand that the times are a-changing and definitions for words such as 'actor' and 'actress' that we were raised and taught with may change or someday be but a footnote in future language.
Since I don't follow the issues of or the lives of actors/actressess as closely as many I am just not up to speed on some newer trends- although I do recall the controversy some wanted to make about 'manhole'. :1chirol_r

Okay, one embarassing moment:

I had a summer job as cashier at one of the chain drug stores. Someone had an item that I had to get a price check on, so I used the phone they had for that purpose.

I hadn't used the phone before, and didn't know exactly how it worked. I got the manager on the line and he started tease-flirting with me. I'm always game for innocent flirting, so went ahead and played along. After a few seconds, everyone in my line started laughing. I still didn't catch on that the whole store was hearing the exchange until the manager told me to depress the button, (or whatever you did to make it private).

All I could do was laugh along with everyone else........probably brightened a few people's day.

Veggie resemblence: Someone with tightly curled hair might be said to resemble Broccoli. Someone with wide hips might be said to resemble an Eggplant. Does that help?

Ok, I'll give a bit as well.

Females only:
1. What actor, musician or politian would be your dream date?
2. What actor, musician or politian would you want strictly for sex?
3. If faced with being stuck on a tropical island for the rest of your life, which one woman would you pick as a companion? She can be living or dead. Careful, this is the only person you'll have around for the rest of your life ...

1. Bono. He can be characterized as all three. And I insist on a week long date.
2. Viggo Mortensen. Yum. Just .... yum! :1kiss1: Whenever I want, forever! ::sigh:: Viggo as my slave ... :sm1135:
3. Liv Tyler. Interesting. Well spoken. Easy on the eyes. Famous parents. And ... I've always said if I ever switched teams, she could do it for me.

(tee hee, now ya know why the LOTR movies were such a great epic for me!)
