That thread is up to 7 pages? Hunh.
(And yes, I posted in the thread a few times so I'm partly responsible for those 7 pages.:D)

Maybe I should chime in and add my rant about how lots of folks can't think of anything else to add to ice cream, dessert, or other dishes--and seem to heave a collective--"It needs something else. Hmm... toss on some peanuts."

Yep, I added my 2cents also - can't remember what page is my last post. But I could see they were going to beat that horse dead and then keep beating.
Too much tv and internet has given me much too short an attention span once the flies start buzzing around a subject. :hazmat:

What's the difference between beer nuts and deer nuts?
Beer nuts are $1.89 and deer nuts are under a buck.

I haven't been around much lately- I usually hang out at Crossfire on OTWA, but it's a total joke anymore so I've just about given up on it.
I do check out the posts here too, but I don't know a lot of the people posting (or the history between them), making the conversations a little difficult to follow at times.

It's up to eight pages now. A lot of people seem to think that if a concession is made for one six year old with a life-threatening condition, the dominoes will fall and eventually entire towns will be deprived of meat to serve the needs of vegetarians. Or something like that.
IOW: if a = b and b = c, then a = :1crazy:

Hi sadie. :)
A lot of people seem to think that if a concession is made for one six year old with a life-threatening condition, the dominoes will fall and eventually entire towns will be deprived of meat to serve the needs of vegetarians. You know, I agree (sort of) with those people.
The problem (IMO) is that people are a whole lot quicker to insist on having their rights respected than being willing to accept their responsibilities. Once word gets out that one kid is getting special attention for his condition, I have no trouble at all believing it will lead to other parents insisting on similar accommodations for their kids.
So... what to do? The question should be- "Is the request reasonable?" Would it be a major imposition to provide a separate "peanut free" table in the lunch room? I wouldn't think so. How about asking parents not to send peanut butter sandwiches to school? Dictating food choices for other people is starting to push the envelope. How about requiring them to dissect food labels to determine if there might be some sort of peanut residue hiding in one of the vague ingredients listed? That seems to be a bit over the top- most people don't have a degree in organic chemistry.

So... what to do? I don't know. Let's talk about it for eight pages. :1chirol_r
I'm not sure how everyone got through the school years in my day without ever hearing one word about a peanut allergy. Is this a new phenomenon, or is it just more rampant now, like asthma and autism?

Is this a new phenomenon, or is it just more rampant now, like asthma and autism? It must be. When I was a kid, there might have been one or two other kids in school who had asthma, but I never heard of anybody with autism or peanut allergies.

I blame it all on pollution. We're being poisoned in the air we breathe and the water we drink, and no one is paying attention. It's just so much easier to outlaw peanut butter than to provide clean air and water.

Eight pages sounds about right. :2headspin :D
Reasonable - excellent point. And it seems to be something that isn't respected as much anymore.
There is a difference between the responsibility the community has to a young child and the responsibility the community has to an adult. If there isn't a difference, then let six year olds vote.
There is a difference between how responsible a young child is for his own well-being, how responsible a teenager is, and how responsible an adult is. Age appropriate takes into consideration variations in experience - it's not a magic line drawn at 18.
There is a difference between making concessions to a disability and making concessions to a choice to be vegan. If we give the key to the teacher's elevator to the child in a wheelchair, do we automatically give the key to anyone who claims they don't climb stairs as a personal belief system?
Reasonable would be a terrific standard. I don't hold out too much hope for the concept of reasonable in a culture that defines what's "right" as being "what's convenient for me."
Peace.

The increase in allergies and asthma could be the result of better medical care. IOW, people with those conditions live long enough to breed more now than they did in the past, and so pass the conditions on to the next generation.
Just a guess and sorry for the totem,
Sadie

Peanut butter kiss did not kill Quebec teen: coroner
Updated Fri. Mar. 3 2006 12:07 PM ET
CTV.ca News Staff
A Quebec teen with a severe peanut allergy did not die from kissing her boyfriend following his snack of peanut butter, a coroner has confirmed.
Michel Miron says the sudden death of fifteen-year-old Christina Desforges in November 2005 was not caused by a peanut butter sandwich.
The tragedy made headlines around the world.
Miron would not reveal the official cause of the teenager's death because he said he hadn't yet submitted his final report and is still waiting on some test results.
But Miron said he wanted to speak out before the case was mentioned in a forthcoming initiative by the Canadian Association of Food Allergies.
"The Canadian Association of Food Allergies intended to use the Desforges case to launch an education campaign," he told Saguenay's Le Quotidien newspaper.
"I had to tell them the cause of death was different than first believed."
Miron also said the teen, who lived in Saguenay, Que., did not receive a shot of adrenalin immediately after being kissed by her boyfriend.
Earlier reports suggested the shot hadn't penetrated her skin.
Miron said scientific journals had contacted him questioning the use of the adrenalin shot and how it was injected.
He said the teen did not use her syringe to give herself a shot of adrenalin because she didn't have an allergic reaction to peanut butter.
Saguenay is about 250 kilometres north of Quebec City.
