- - Atkins diet ever tried it? (http://www.otwa.com/community/showthread.php?t=8403)
tegan Apr-07-03 02:24 AM
Well after two years on weight watchers with great success the first year (42 lbs lost) and great frustration the second (up and down the same 7 pounds for 6 months and then ended up gaining back 12) my doctor has put me on the Atkins diet.
I had always heard it was unsafe even my doctor told me not to go on it until this last visit when he came back from a seminar on metabolism. He is now convinced it is the best diet for someone like me with a sluggish metabolism.
I have a thyroid problem and have been on synthroid for two years. Even when I followed the diet (WW)to the letter weighing and measuring everything I still could not lose these past six months.
So far on atkins I have lost 7 lbs in one week and I am really not hungry at all. (I realize it is mostly water)
Has anyone else tried this diet?
I'm wondering if it stays this easy because so far I haven't had one craving and I got those all the time on WW. Having the low carb bars as a snack once a day really helps me. I don't really miss the bread at all.
I have two friends that have been on it for a year now and the husband has lost 75 lbs and the wife 50. He is still on it but she has quit. She gained back a few lbs but not much and seems to be holding steady at where she is.
I always heard that once you went off this diet you gain back all the weight and more but I have seen that happen with weight watchers too.
Has anyone had experience on this diet?
I am just amazed at the jump in energy level on the 5th day. I felt sick and had headaches the first two days and almost quit.
But now I am just racing through my housework and still have energy to spare.

My Mother is on Atkins at the recommendation of her doctor and she said she lost 6 pounds the first week which is amazing because she does not lose weight easily. I am thiking of checking it out but I really love my toast in the morning and pasta is the only thing everyone is my house will eat together. Good luck!~

I really thought I would miss the bread myself but I don't.
We really gave the diet a test last night and went out to eat.
The basket of rolls did not tempt me at all I just shoved them to my husbands side of the table.
When I was on weight watchers I would have to have one and count off the three to four points and then I would be miserable wanting more.
I got to have a good size steak and had them bring my salad with my meal so I had plenty to eat and wasn't bothered by the thoughts of desert like I used to be.
I loved Weight Watchers but no matter how much exercise I added or how many days I ate at the low range of my points I just couldn't lose any more those last six months.
My doctor said I could go back to it if I like after the atkins diet resets my metabolism but I don't know if I am really going to want to.

Hi Tegan,
I went on low carb in late September of last year. By Christmas I had lost about 40 lbs. and I'm a short female. I had been carrying the extra weight from having my daughter four years ago. I'm over 40 so combining the older body and baby weight made it really tough to lose. I still need to lose about 10-15 lbs. but I am so much happier (and look much better too). Although I have a killer sweet tooth, I had very little trouble sticking with it.
Now, however, I have been creeping back into old habits and really need to get back on it with a vengence. I think the reason people gain weight back when they go off diets is just because they go back to eating exactly like they were when they were overweight. I mean, truly, do they think they can go back to eating anything and everything and NOT gain any back? http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif
I'm glad doctors are finally doing more research and apparently determining that low carb diets aren't as unsafe as they've been made out to be.
SnowyOwl Apr-07-03 03:09 AM
I went on it, but added more carbs because I didn't think it was safe. In about 2 months, I lost 15 lbs. When I went off of it, I started eating just like before and gained a few lbs. back, but just went back on the diet for a week and it was gone again. Right after I started the diet, I started cross country skiing too, so the exercise probably helped a lot. Like most diets, I think it's a little extreme, but if you modify it and take a break from it once in a while, you shouldn't have any trouble.
BTW, it took me about a month to start drooling over bread. http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif

Melbay: thank you for the recipes and I will check out the stores for the other stuff. I can always use good low carb recipes. I have a shelf full of cookbooks but most of them are of no use to me now.
I tried to find a good cookbook for low carb at Barnes and Nobles last night but no luck.
Marble: do you use sweet and low or that sucra stuff?
I have not been able to find that in packets for decaf coffee or tea so all I have been drinking for the past week is water. I really would like an occaisional cup of tea.
Weight watchers taught me to drink my water. I don't even think about it anymore I just empty my huge weight watchers cup twice a day.
Ikie: Good for you. It feels real good to lose that much weight.
Snowyowl: I used to love cross country skiing. Hated the downhill stuff, not really into speed and all. With cross country you could go at a nice pace and enjoy the countryside.
God I miss the cool blue north!!

Another Atkins believer here. I originally lost 30 lbs. on it, but have been kind of off and on since Christmas. Five lbs. came back but now I'm holding steady. I blame ME for the 5 lbs, not Atkins. And Bonmur's fudge!
I have pasta once a week, small amounts of bread more often, allow myself sugar on occasion.
I used to suffer from brain fog sometimes, inability to concentrate and "think clearly". I was amazed that Atkins did away with that! Another benefit was that it wiped out my monthly bout with cramps.

I can't develop a taste for the stuff in the pink packets. Too bitter. That and after all the hype on the 70s and 80s, I still feel like I'm ingesting powdered cancer.

Frogmammy,
Best thing to do is get the latest Atkins book. You start a two week program called induction that is somewhat stricter than the "regular" Atkins plan (it's not too complicated but you really need to have the book to refer to).
You can also Google "low carb" and come up with a lot of information including mailing lists and Yahoo groups. I'm on the Atkins Support mail list and it's pretty good. There are a lot of recipe suggestions both on the list and on the web.
Good luck!

Hey Tegan
I started Atkins on March 5 of this year, so far I have lost 14 lbs. It is amazing how you seem to be able to eat all the time and lose weight. On other diets where they restrict fat I was always hungry.
I have found a couple of sites that have been a tremendous amount of help for low carbing. You might like to check them out.
If you guys have not tried Grams Gourmet Cinnamon bun & butter pork rinds...they are fabulous...great for when you need to have something to munch on. Just do a google search for the name and you will find where to order them. You can have them on induction.

I love Atkins! I've been on it since I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue and Mono, it cleared up the brainfog and most of the other symptoms I had. The diet is easy for me because I eat exactly what I love to eat http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif
A great website is Low-Carb Friends Lot's of advice, stories and recipes.
I use Splenda, can't stand the taste of diet stuff but Splenda isn't so bad. Diet Rite cola is made with Splenda and my absolute favorite, Edy's No Sugar Added ice cream is made with Splenda.
I thought I'd have a hard time missing pasta but I don't, I cook it for the kids and have no urge to eat it. I have had some since but it didn't thrill me. My tastebuds have changed http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif
Make some low carb cheesecake, that's my breakfast food http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...on_biggrin.gif
If you modify it, it isn't Atkins. Other low-carb plans are out there that allow more carbs, Sommersize, Fit for Life, etc.
Atkins has a cookbook too. Check eBay for them.
The first two weeks of induction are hard, I was sooo sick going through withdrawal, but after that my brain cleared up and I started being 'normal' again after 6 months of hell. My husband thinks this diet is weird but he says that he's seen what it has done for me and he's not going to knock it.

We just started the diet last week. In an unusual spin it was my hubby that put us both on a diet. His daughter graduates HS & he is going down there for it (she lives with ex-wife). I guess he wanted to look his best & we've both gone rather slack these last few years. I personally did not want this particular diet but he did & he can't do it without me (he would NEVER cook for himself or pack his own lunch).
I don't think I've ever had a meal without rice or noodles or potatoes & having to give up my hot tea (I use sugar & milk) just makes my mornings suck. He drinks black coffee & loves eggs but he's never eaten a meal without bread & potatoes so I guess we are at least miserable together.
I bought the cookbook & a carb counter book, but I didn't read the plan myself. So far I've eaten enough wilted spinach to turn my skin green. I spent the first week nauseus.
Most of these foods on the list I don't like (but he does), like eggs (I never eat them if you can actually see the egg), so I'm eating the same couple of things over & over. Yuch. Plus my daughter is super finicky & won't eat most of it either, so I'm making 2 or 3 different meals every night, plus packing his lunch. On the plus side it is forcing my daughter to eat healthier too because there are no snacks in the house anymore, and since she's the only one who can eat carbs, I'm cooking only a small portion for her so her carb intake is lower too.

Victoria - If you like flavored coffee, the davinci sugarfree syrups are great . . . they are sweetened with Splenda, and come in flavors like vanilla, hazelnut, chocolate, french vanilla, etc. Just a bit of skim or soy milk, and one of these syrups is great in coffee.

Victoria, you can drink tea. Use Splenda and heavy cream. I use half & half but heavy cream is not only allowed, it is encouraged. What else are you eating? You don't have to eat just spinach you know.
Dr. Atkins recommends you get your chlolesteral checked before you start the diet and then again after 6 months. Before 6 months the results are screwy. Mine went down to normal when it was at medication levels before.

Count me in as another Atkinser. Lost 40 pounds and am keeping it off. I have ten to go and that is slow going, but I'm about as sedentary as a person can be w/out being bed-ridden.
I plan one carb day a month now. And I do it based on the Carbohydrate addict's books. It's pretty easy for me to not eat all day, so on my carb day, I don't eat until supper, then I eat as much carbs as I want. I don't binge all night, I just eat the one meal.
I have more energy, less joint pain, 40 pounds less fat, and in general have found it easy to follow. I don't keep anything in the house that is carb-rich. I don't miss bread or rice at all, and my carb day each month takes care of my pasta needs. http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif
I don't even feel deprived. Because if I did, I'd choose being plump over being miserable any old day. Life's too short to give up brie cheese. http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...on_biggrin.gif
Peace,
Sadie

I did Atkins a couple years ago and lost about 40 pounds. Unfortunately, I treated it as a diet and not a way of life. Not long after I'd lost the weight I slowly started eating some of those things I'd cut out of my life--potatoes, corn, bread, banannas and sweets. Not long after I began eating those things again, I forgot all about atkins and before I knew it the weight was back--and it came quickly! If you're gonna do it, stay on it for life. I don't think diets work, I think it has to become your way of eating for a lifetime!
Good luck!!

I renewed my acquaintance with Dr. Atkins a little over a year ago after having to start blood pressure medication. I lost all my retained fluid before starting (meds took care of that) so I never lost a huge amount of weight in the first couple of weeks, but so far I have lost over 50 pounds. I just got off a plateau and the scale is moving downward again.
My cholesterol and triglycerides dropped into the normal range within a few weeks of restarting Atkins, and are still in the normal range a year later. In fact, my cholesterol and triglycerides are much better than they were ten years ago. I've also been able to have BIA tests done, and the results of those show that my loss has been mostly fat and some fluid, no muscle. (My lean muscle mass has actually increased, and without exercise.)
I, too am eating what I really love, so it's not too difficult!
As for Splenda, has anyone tried looking on eBay? I got a great deal on a case of packets -- half the retail price!

Is this diet easy to do-without much "thinking" about how to eat. IE-know that breads/pastas are carbs. And know to read the labels. But is there alot of other food lists I have to know, keep a calculator, etc.?
Before I buy a book I'd like to know if it's something I can keep up with. Is it expensive? I looked on ebay and see tons of bars/etc. and don't wanna spend that kind of money on food http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...s/icon_eek.gif

I'm thoroughly enjoying adapting recipes to no- or low-carb, that Splenda vanilla syrup is a lifesaver, as are the 2 carb pancakes I've learned to make. I never knew there were so many things available in low-carb products - I just found "honey" and barbecue sauce!!!

Deb just reminded me that while powdered Splenda has carbs liquid Splenda has none. I use DaVinci's Sugar Free Vanilla Syrup to sweeten everything that needs Splenda.
MGC, read the book. If you go by the websites you'll think its the hardest thing to do but I stopped reading them and that's when I started losing http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif Basically you cut out all white food, breads, pastas, potatoes, and all sugar and fruit. You can eat fat, this is the thing that makes the diet work. You train your body to eat fat for energy instead of carbs. You can eat as much meat, seafood and eggs as you want, lots of cheese. You need to eat 2 cups of salad and one cup of cooked green vegies a day (for induction). If you are hungry, eat! The fatty foods fill you up. After you do it for 2 weeks you stop feeling hungry at all, you may have to force yourself to eat but you need to eat at least 3 meals a day, they recommend you eat every 3 hours.
After induction you can gradually start adding some carbs back in, including fruits. You keep adding carbs until you stop losing.
mommygonecrazy Apr-07-03 11:26 AM
induction-sounds like something I had done in labor lol
WHICH book-there are lots of different ones. I'd like one that isn't "this diet will change your life" "this is the best diet" etc. I just want one that says "do this for this reason" no rhetoric/propaganda/etc. Does that make sense?

I never thought of myself as much of a meat eater...actually did the vegetarian thing for a couple of years in college. I'm also not crazy about eggs but I can eat them occasionally. Mostly I love bread, rice, biscuits, (did I mention bread?), and won't turn my nose up at pasta. (Although, since being on the diet, I've really lost my taste for pasta and don't want it at all...too bad I still love bread). I wanted the diet to work because I knew I couldn't "just cut down." That never works for me. It was low carb or nothing.
The first week is the worst. If you can get through days 3-7 you've got it made. The first couple days is not a big deal. About day 3 I started to feel really bad. By day 5 I emailed a friend and told her I didn't think the diet was for me because it was making me sick. She said it was common and would pass. I only halfway believed her but I really needed to lose the weight so I stuck it out. I think they call it the Atkins Flu. After the first week, I started feeling better. Then, I started feeling GREAT!
One of my favorite dinner meals is chicken and broccoli alfredo over steaming hot french style green beans. The green beans mimic the texture of pasta and the alfredo sauce is made with real cream, butter and cheese. Rich and filling...so good! http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif

How did y'all actually START the diet, that's what I'd like to know.
Have been on the Constant Carbohydrate diet for diabetics (I-R-1) and it JUST wasn't working, so decided I need to switch to a low carb diet. Have been trying to get more info!

I sometimes use Equal, althought it's supposedly "carby." I use Splenda when it's available.

Check out these sites.

Be sure to have your cholesterol checked often. Mine went up to 326 on the Atkins Diet. My doctor had a fit and told me to get off the diet..

The 3fatchicks.com site has some low-carb recipes:
http://www.3fatchicks.com/cookbook/lowcarb/
They also have a forum for low-carb dieters.

I get confused easy http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
Is this diet easy to do-without much "thinking" about how to eat. IE-know that breads/pastas are carbs. And know to read the labels. But is there alot of other food lists I have to know, keep a calculator, etc.?
Before I buy a book I'd like to know if it's something I can keep up with. Is it expensive? I looked on ebay and see tons of bars/etc. and don't wanna spend that kind of money on food http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...s/icon_eek.gif

Count DH and I as Atkins people, too!
DH has lost 35 pounds, and while I'm struggling along at 14, the best part is that my blood sugar is normal for the first time in 8 years, and my cholesteral is (drum roll please) 155, down from 238!
I agree that it is a lifestyle change, thankfully, I love to cook and have always liked meat and cheese - if I hadn't, I'd never have made it this far!

As for Atkins, I can't do it. Tried, failed miserably. Too restrictive for me. Plus, it didn't set well with my 'inner-self'.
I've been on WW's since Valentines and have lost 14 lbs. I don't feel AT ALL deprived. This is something I can stick to.

this link above is to a forum that is like my second home after this place....i have been on since last july and have lost over 50 lbs....not sure how much i lost as i stopped weighing at some point...(too scary)...anyway, i have fibromyalgia, lupus and chronic fatique syndrome....this diet has really helped releave alot of the symptoms of all the above....in fact i have begun to feel better than i have felt in years....i would keep in touch with the forums as these people know and share alot of great information;
on my first go around on atkins i did it without reading the book or having guidance....i quickly failed as i was doing the diet wrong and therefore didn't lose weight and was miserable....it was amazing that when i read the book the plan was much more successful and more pleasant(as pleasant as it can be when you don't get to have what you want to eat)
anyway, good luckhttp://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
