I am FAT and have to lose weight, I have 3 kids and a SO that is a meat and potatoes guy.
We are ( after 3 kids and 15 years) getting married in May :-)
I want to get back to my pre-kid weight, the weight I was when he " only had eyes for me" you know, that light up a room happiness when I walked into the room ,sincerely glad to see me and could not wait to get me alone http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...on_biggrin.gif
ANywhoo... I have a ton of wl stuff here and would like opinions. I have tried Slim fast but,I am not much of a shake gal. Atkins overloaded me with too much meat, I gotta have veggies. I have the whole weight watchers system as well as Richard Simmons deal a meal, and many more.,
Help me get motivated! I want to lose 40 lbs total, and would like to lose at least 25 by May,. I am only 5'3 and a pound on me shows up !
Elt me know your similar stories and how, when where you did them.
I wanna be a "hottie" LOL

Congratulations, Bon! I'm fighting the battle of the bulge myself, and not having much luck, so I'll let somebody else run with the weightloss thing.
But I'll just bet his eyes STILL light up.

Before trying any kind of "plan" ($$) I think the best way to start is to just write down everything you eat in a day. Then mark off everything that wasn't a meal. That will give you a thought as to how much unnecessary food you are eating. Take baby steps and eliminate one snack on a gradual basis.
Then, go back to your list and write down how many calories and fat it was. Take all of the "not-so-healthy" items and see if you can substitute something. For instance I am well out of my childhood and still love to eat Pop tarts for breakfast. Instead of having 2 pop tarts every morning, have 1. Or have 2 on monday and a banana the rest of the week.
Portions is another thing to look at. How do you eat potato chips. Do you just grab a bag and munch? Look at the serving size and set out the 17 chips or whatever and then don't eat anymore.
Dieting is mostly about changing your habits and changing your lifestyle. This is what my "diet" has consisted of for 3 weeks and I have lost 6 pounds so far. Yes, it's mainly through less eating, but that is what dieting is - eating less and exercising more.

Hi, Bon! I can't say enough good things about WW - DH and I have both been on it since last June. He has lost over 40 pounds, and I have lost 30 . . . and you never have to be hungry if you keep up with your points and do a little planning. (He and I are probably close to twice your age . . . you would be able to lose faster than we have!)
We started walking a lot, and we depend heavily on vegetables and fruit. I am like you - I have to have my veggies!
I also just bought a Gazelle Edge exerciser, and I love it!
There are a couple of boards that offer a lot of support to people who are dieting . . . Health Discovery has the 3 Fat Chicks board, which has forums for all kinds of weight loss programs, and Boot Camp Buddies is strictly for WW. They both have a ton of information, including recipes, etc. If you do a Google search for those names, you will find them! Dotti's Weight Loss Zone is another good one for people on WW.

Hi Bonmur-
Just wanted to put in a plug for Weight Watchers (I don't work for them or anything) I've been on it since October and have lost 23 pounds - only two more pounds to my goal of losing 25. One thing I especially like is that you learn to eat real food in appropriate portions, so no weird shakes or special food to buy. I think this is a key to success in being able to keep the weight off once you lose it. The support in the meetings is great, too. I am sort of a skinflint, so the idea of paying $10 a week kinda bothered me, but it's also motivational. Besides - if I didn't lose weight and get control of eating, I was going to have to go on cholesterol meds for the rest of my life, so this is well worth it. Whichever program you choose, I wish you the best!

There is an interesting article at the washingtonpost.com this morning on changing habits, keeping resolutions, etc . . . could offer some ideas to anyone trying to improve their eating habits, stop smoking, etc.

Another vote for Weight Watchers here. I started 1/1/03 & I am down 10 so far. http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif Watch out for the high carbs in that Slim Fast! I find lots of great recipes at WW's website on the message boards & on the Community Recipe Swap. Good luck, whatever you decide to do!

I will plug Weight Watchers, too. I joined in 1994, lost 24 pounds and made lifetime member. Kept it off for two years then had my third daughter. I stopped going to WW regularly and I gained it back again (weird but mostly gained it after she was about 1 year old).
Went back in May of 2002 and have gone weekly since then. I have lost about 15 pounds this time. I seem to be having a much harder time of it now, but then again I just turned 45 and that changes things. I especially like the way WW lets you manage your own food program- if you do well on low carb, fine. If you prefer a balanced approach- fine. It all revolves around INPUT/OUTPUT-- keep calories down and exercise up.

I have just begun leading a First Place weight loss and healthy lifestyle group at my church. It is a non-profit group based on the USDA food pyramid and the American Diabetes Association type food exchange lists. It also includes some prayer, team support, Bible study, exercise, etc. http://www.firstplace.org
The exchange list way of life is just that - it is something you can keep following for the rest of your life.
The rate of loss is 2 lbs. per week and for a 245 lb. person you get to eat 1500 calories a day and still lose weight steadily.
You eat a variety of food from the dairy, protein, breads, fat, fruit and veggie exchange lists. (e.g. 1 cup of raw veggies is one serving or exchange). You don't count calories, just exchange servings.
It is very balanced and very healthy. You are given a range of exchanges (e.g. Milk, 2-3 exchanges per day) and lists of foods that you can eat.
Just type in "food exchanges" or "diabetic diet" or "healthy exchanges" into any search engine and you will find tons of stuff.
The nice thing about firstplace.org is that you can eat "sugary stuff" once in awhile, just write it down on your food plan diary and forget it. There are no forbidden foods, just moderation.
Here is a sample recipe giving the exchanges at the end:
Caribbean Chicken
******************
4 (4 ounce) boneless, skinless chicken breasts
4 medium green onions, sliced
1 jalapeno chili, seeded and chopped (add more or less if
desired)
1/3 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup honey
2 teaspoons dried thyme
2 teaspoons olive oil
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Salt and pepper to taste
Combine all ingredients except chicken in a microwave-safe bowl.
Heat marinade in the microwave for a couple seconds to soften
the honey and mix well. Place chicken in a shallow glass dish or
resealable plastic bag. Pour marinade over chicken and turn to
coat. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours. Spray a grill or
broiler with nonstick spray. Remove chicken from marinade and
place on rack. Cover and grill or broil for 6-7 minutes per side
or until no longer pink. Baste with marinade during cooking but
discard any unused marinade before serving.

Today is my first day ever on WW... I joined Online yesterday.
I need to lose to get my diabeties under control.. I started
a Free 21 week study in DAllas last week. If I lose 30, I will
be ok but I plan to lose 40. I gotta do it for a quality life.
This online selling does not motivate me to jump around. http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gifhttp://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
Going now to log in my breakfast. For 54.95 for 3 months,
everthing is there plus 24 hour support. I studied the plan
for several days. My sis has lost 20 lbs on WW and so has
an online friend. They are sold on WW.
Tks for thread.

I too need to despratley lose this weight! I am in such bad health that I just can't not try...
I need to lose a lot more than 40 pounds but I'd really like some advice on how to go about it also! I need help! Maybe some of us can all get motivated together and maybe then with the support of others we can get this weight off!

I will be happy to fax it to you, Vikki, or any of you if
you have a place to receive.... I do not use a scanner here.
Or I could copy it and mail it to you.
This plan is very much like weightwatchers. I do think
the 54.95 for 3 months is not bad for WW. Therafter, the
plan is 14.95 per month.

Bah, you're a hottie now. After a couple months in the OTWA losers thread I need to lose 30 myself, not 20 anymore haha, so I'll join ya. I've always been interested in seeing what this "points" stuff was about.
Nothing used to make me lose weight faster than simply walking with my heart rate up for one hour a day. In my experience if you do that the appetite just takes care of itself.

I highly recommend Somersizing by Suzanne Somers. It is a version of Atkins but you are encouraged to cut out all refined sugar and unlike Atkins you are encouraged to eat fruits and carbs. The big thing is combining the food in the proper sequence. It is daunting at first but once you get the hang of it, it is really easy. I lost 74 pounds and my cholesterol dropped from 295 to 214. I still have more to lose and am working on it. If your family is a meat and potatoes family it will fit in only youas a Somersizer could not have the potatoes but the rest of the family can. I make meals and my hubby doesn't even know they are Somersized.
You don't have to buy her food either if you don't want to because it is expensive. I buy it for convenience but in her latest book she gives a lot of the recipes for her products.
There is tons of support and ideas at her website and all kinds of great recipes.

It is down right now but it has so much good info.

Another plug for weight watchers here. It's a life change with real food. (and i still eat domino's once a week).
Just make sure that you have fairly recent info from weight watchers. They have refined the system and Points is definetly the way to go. I do it online, so no meetings, but logging every bite that crosses my lips, keeps me honest.
Good luck whatever you choose to do.

I'll say what Johnny said.
Exercise is the only thing that has kept my weight down over the years.
When I stop exercising, the weight goes back up. And I eat very healthily.
I have an exercise bike that I ride while watching TV and I walk as much as I can everyday.
The food you eat is important but exercise is an absolute necessity.

I did WW twice in my life - so far. The first time when I was a kid and lost 20 lbs. I was the youngest member of the group. My parents fed me and made sure I stuck to the diet. They even got me WW ice cream (remember that from the 70's?), which wasn't too bad - once you got used to it. I don't remember why I stopped going to WW, but I eventually gained the weight back.
Then I was on WW again, after I had already lost about 60 lbs from switching to a Vegetarian diet - the weight came off quick, and it may have led up to me losing my Gallbladder for it - since the doc told me quick weight loss can lead up to gallbladder problems (I wouldn't want to wish GB attacks on anyone!).
I was "stuck" and needed to lose another 30-40 lbs and that was when I went back to WW. I lost 20 lbs within 3 months, but then got stuck on a plateau and after 3 months of staying at the same weight (altho I looked pretty good where I was), I got frustrated and depressed with going to the meetings and having to sit there and listen to everyone "brag" about how much weight they lost that week - when I wasn't losing anything anymore! I grew disenchanted with it all and stopped going.
Then I got on eBay (4 years ago) and stopped working out and dieting and gained ALL the weight back (80 lbs!) plus a bit more. Besides the fact I finally got a car (after only bike riding everywhere all those years) which was even less exercise for me and now I have NO motivation whatsoever and just plain lazy mostly!
I hope to lost the weight again, since I've already noticed how the excess weight is affecting me and how I feel. Bloated constantly, clothes tight, sore back/body in the mornings since I mainly only sleep on my back now and can barely lay/sleep on my side without rolling back over on my back, tired all the time, and I'm pretty sure high blood pressure and diabetes are in my future also...
I think about all of the above constantly to "motivate" me. I just love to eat too much and it shows! Just hard to eat little portions of food on a "diet", when I want more to feel "satisfied" and "full".
I guess I don't want to go back to WW again, since I don't want to sit thru those meetings all over again, and I'll admit I really don't want to get on a scale and find out EXACTLY how much I weigh now either since that will probably kill me!
Anyway, I guess I'll try something eventually, and hopefully soon, before I gain any more weight... http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif

I just started WW at Work and find it pretty easy to follow. I'm not nearly as cranky as I usually am when I start a diet. http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif I know how to lose weight and I know how to eat properly, I just have trouble with the maintenance and lifestyle change that one must make to maintain both of those. I have pretty good resolve this time though, so I plan to make it.
And, my #1 suggestion to you would be GET THE FUDGE OUT OF YOUR HOUSE! lol

I agree with you on that! http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif I hate the meetings - I'm just not a "meeting" person, because I get bored too easily, I think. My husband goes to the meetings (he's a more social type than I am), but I follow the WW plan religiously, writing down every bite I eat, along with the points.
There are a lot of people who follow WW but don't attend meetings. They either join online, or just follow the plan without even doing that. Once you have the materials, it is not that hard.
I've known others who had to have gall bladder surgery after rapid weight loss - one of them very young.

I lost over 40 lbs last year on WW but have since gained some of it back. I started going again with a friend in july and she has lost 35 lbs since then and I have only lost 7.
I still go every week and weigh in and attend at least 3 meetings a month. I know it seems like an awful lot of work for 7 pounds but just think of what I would have gained by now if I quit.
How much would you pay not to get fatter is the question I ask myself when I feel like quiting.
I am going to have my blood test done this month for my thyroid and that may be the problem. He had to bump the dosage of my synthroid medicine up once before when I stalled at the weight loss.
Attending the meetings (although it is a pain in the but) is one of the most improtant parts of the program. A much greater percentage of people who attain goal come from those that attended the meetings.(they told us how much but I forget)
I am going to start adding more exercise to my program and keep to the bottom range of my points for the next month and see if that helps.

I'll put my vote in for WW too. I have been countin' the points for what seems like forever. If anyone is interested, I have the points calculator worked up as a nifty excel file - I can email it to anyone who wants it.
I like the variety and also that I don't necessarily feel deprived of any one item.
How come nobody mentioned WATER as the ultimate diet tool? Seriously it can make or break weight loss.
I also joined Curves last November, I go every week night on the way home from work. I like the stress relief it offers and that it is quick and relatively painless.
good luck gals

Hi, Purecheez...
Just tried e-mailing you, but it was kicked back... I would really, really appreciate receiving the WW points calculator.
As a result of "kiching the habit" a few months ago, plus the high-calorie/carb holidays, the DH and I have packed on a ton of pounds. He is trying Atkins and I am trying NOTHING - I am not a big mega meat fan. I really need something kinder and gentler and thought maybe WW might be the answer, altho' I have no clue how they work. The hardest meal for me is lunch - I feel it is not a meal, satisfying or filling unless it includes 2 slices of bread and mayo!!!
Thanks sooo much Purecheez... Any info, tips, hints, ideas, links you are willing to send my way, will be g-r-e-a-t-l-y appreciated!

some water packed tune ( not very much) for lunch.
SOme of the Taco soupp that is only 2 points ( very good and filling, have some left for tomorrow
Some pretzels, do not love them but wanted a salt fix
a diet coke because I love regular pepsi and have to have my soda 1X a day, do not like diet pepsi though,,,
DId not do much exercising as it was head to toe housecleaning day so, I will do my eight minute abs and buns tapes and then lw impact aerobics for the remainder of the hour.
I sure hope I can do this. I am a very weak person LOL.
The good thing is the rest of the family is fine with the food I have fixed so far and DH even agreed to eat the foods until he couldnt stand them
We have ALOT of wild game and I knnow it is very low in fat as there is none in the meat that I can see so I will be sing much more of that.
Now I just need some fresh fruit( not a small feat here) and I will be good.
I LOVE fruit , Not esp apples but oranges Pomegranates, grapes, berries and grapefruit.
I will check back in here tomorrow and let you know my days foods. I gotta do this or I will fall off of the wagon :-)

But I'll just bet his eyes STILL light up.
WBBell Jan-20-03 10:51 PM
Yes, it's mainly through less eating, but that is what dieting is - eating less and exercising more.
kudzurose Jan-20-03 10:54 PM

I take pills... Now, I am off pills for three weeks and
controling w/ my diet. Hey, I have 4 sheets from my doctor's nutritionist in Dallas.

The food you eat is important but exercise is an absolute necessity.
mickey Jan-21-03 04:24 AM

I weighed ( YAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH)
I had coffee for breakfast http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...on_biggrin.gif
some water packed tune ( not very much) for lunch.

Great going. You are losing it kinda fast arent ya?
WHAT IS YOUR SECRET????
My first week into a diet I usually will drop anywhere from 3 to 5 pounds... this time is IFFY cause its not been that long since I went on my other "kickkeester" diet.. LOL
I still think I can shed at least 4 pounds this week though.
Next week however its gonna only be 2 if I dont start doing SOME kind of freaking exercise.
I wanna be fit before summer rolls around or I am gonna skeer little kids away.. LOL
Keep up the good work there George and if you happen to see Bonmur... make her check in here.. http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif

The ladies at work are all doing WW now. One of them lost 8 lbs. the first week. I'm the spreadsheet maven at work so I put the numbers into a sheet and calculated at that rate she would totally diasappear by mid-April... http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...on_biggrin.gif
At the rate they're losing it I figure in a few months I'm be working amongst a bevy of supermodels... http://community.otwa.com/infopop/em...on_biggrin.gif

I am here :-)
We went to Nevada for 2 days to wager on the game :-0
Did Ok In Spite of the tremendous Buffets and Miles.
Hopefully all of the running around I did while out there helped me at least break even. Also I did not indulge in any alcoholic beverages so that may have helped.
Back in full force but, I am afraid to weigh this week
