Kitchen Utensils
 I'm starting this thread because I get so disgusted with utensils/equipment that I buy. But feel free to sound off or ask about any that you might want to know about or complain about!! Or even better--recommend!!! :)
About a year and a half ago I found and bought a kitchen mitt that is made of (for lack of knowing the real name) neoprene or wet-suit material. I loved it! It was the first oven mitt that I'd found that actually didn't let the heat thru. I liked it so much that I asked for another one for Christmas/BD. Got it. Now mind you, these aren't cheap oven mitts. I think they run somewhere around $15-20 each.
Ok, now here we are a year and half later for the one and not even a year for the other. BOTH have had the stitching wear out in the webbing between the thumb and fingers. This means that every time I go to pick something up I burn MY webbing between the thumb and fingers. And I just did it again tonight! OUCH!!!!!
Does anyone know of anything better? I want something that grips--I don't want a hot dish to slip out of my hands--and protects up to at least 500 degrees.

Sorry, I can't help you with any suggestions for the oven mit except stock up on them and buy stock in the company. ;)
I love kitchen gadgets, especially Pampered Chef items. This is my latest favorite. It's their Easy Opener. I swear by it. Prior to using this thing, I didn't purchase 2-Liter drink bottles because they always lost their fizz with the bottle half full. Now, with the use of this little Easy Opener, the fizz remains right down to the last ounce in the bottle. I just didn't have the grip necessary to screw the cap back on. It's a 3 bottle opener in one; with a pry off and a flip-top section too. Also saves on the finger-nails with the flip-top section.

I also gave one to my daughter who has MS. She loves it. Her hand strengh isn't as good as the typical person has.

Not really a Utensil but more of a gadget that I'd like to pass on....
For Mothers Day I picked up a Black and Decker Lids Off Automatic Jar Opener for my Mom. She's 75 and has some issues with arthritis and general hand strength but is still quite independent. She's not much for mincing words anymore either (heh!) but she can't say enough good things about it.
She uses it to open everything from water bottles to pickles. I guess whether it's a new item or re-opening an existing one, she rarely twists a lid by hand anymore.

I am a big fan of wooden, preferably bamboo utensils for cooking. I just feel comfy with them!
My most favorite utensil is my Case 400-8 chef's knife. Stole it from my Mom, gave it to a friend, he lost it!!!!!!!!, and I found another on ebay finally. :)

Well, I finally got tired of burning my thumb webs!
Today when I was at Costco, they had a package of 2 of these plus 2 hot pads/trivets for $24.xx.
So, I got them. They look and feel like they're gonna work just fine. The only thing is that they're sorta big and aren't gonna fit into my potholder drawer unless I clean it out.

Glad you found a workaround for your oven mitt problem, Deb! :)
I'd like to recommend the Microplane family of graters. They're wonderful for grating or shaving harder foods like parmesan cheese or chocolate.

I use the zester/grater and the ribbon/grater and love them both. :D

I've had a Henkels 4 star chef's knife for almost 20 years, and it's my favorite knife.

I'm a stickler about properly cooked meats. I cook by internal temp, not time. But I was never happy with meat thermometer results and they were always hard for my 'old' eyes to read when inside the oven.
A couple of weeks ago, I purchased ($29.99) an external-oven thermometer and I absolutely LOVE it! You put the probe in the meat and it has a wire that you close the oven door on and the digital unit at the other end sits on stove top or side. It afixes with two strong magnets on it's back. You punch in the final temp you want and click the start button. An alarm goes off when your preset temp is reached. No need to ever open the oven again during cooking!
It also has a timer that you can use alone or with the thermometer.

My favorite grater is the "Mouli" brand vintage graters that comes with 5 metal blades. It is so easy to use, clean and store. I've came across several at thrift stores and sold them on ebay too, but I won't part with mine :D

The welders at my husband's job wear gloves that look just like cheap gardening gloves but protect your hands from heat. They are GREAT to use for oven mitts! I have no idea what the technical name for them is but I love mine!

I like the pampered chef wooden spoons and couldn't survive without my cast iron skillet that was my Mother's before me.
Here's one I need help on. I'm a lefty and have trouble with knives. I have one little paring knife that I have been using for over 20 yrs and it has just about had it. I have tried numerous ones but I can't find anything that feels comfortable in my hand, slices or pares smoothly, or doesn't slide through to cut my fingers. Any recommendations??
maison rustique Oct-13-04 07:45 AM
Cariad, can you post a pic of the one you have? Maybe there's something out there that has a similar-shaped handle. Although if it's wood, it may have "conformed" to your hand over the years.
cariad Oct-13-04 04:21 PM
my poor, worn, trusty little knife.
maison rustique Oct-13-04 08:13 PM
Cariad, I'm suspecting that maybe it is the wood conforming to your hand. I PMd Bladepusher who knows everything there is to know about knives and asked him to look in on this. Maybe he'll have a suggestion!! :)
maison rustique Oct-13-04 08:15 PM
And just a note to all about getting new knives. Please be careful with them. They are so much sharper than your old ones. It's really easy to cut yourself badly. Don't ask me how I know... :o

I am left handed with really small hands and I love my five star Henckels and also the Henckels Professional S line. The Professional S line is almost like a wooden handled knife and not too big.You might really like the Professsional S knives.
