Sweet Potato Question...HELP!!!

I've never made sweet potato's before. I bought a huge can of Sweet Potato's in Syrup. What do I do with them? Can I just dump them in a dish and heat and serve?

I usually drain them and put them in a skillet with a little butter and brown sugar.....cook on med high heat for about 15-20 minutes and then I top them with some small marshmallows and allow them to melt over the top.....YUM!!!

Morticia/Cassie, that depends on how bad you want them to look! :roflmao: You could always tuck them into the litter cake!

You can use them in any recipe for "sweet" sweet potatoes since they are already sweetened and cooked (if I understand what you bought correctly). If you've never had savory sweet potatoes, try them sometime. You can use sweet potatoes (from raw) just like you can regular potatoes--mashed, scalloped, twice-baked, etc. :tasty:

Deb, I'm assuming that they're cooked. The can only says "Bruce's Yams Cut Sweet Potatoes In Syrup" and the pic on the can lookes cooked.

Renaissance...that sounds super easy and I have all the ingrediants. I'll do that with them. I was hoping there was something super simple that I can do with them and that sounds like the way to go. Sounds delish too! After I top them with the marshmellows, I'll pop it under the broiler for a min to brown them...that should make the dish look better :D

Thanks! You folks are the best!

The answer is yes.

I'm not a fan of marshmallow-type sweet potatoes. With canned, I usually just dump them in a bowl, add a dab of butter and microwave.

That's even better...if I run short of time I can resort to that. Thanks so much Jayne. But if I have the time, I'll do the brown sugar and marshmallow thing. It sounds like something my hubby's family would love.

The only reason time is such a factor for me is that hubby's family have this weird idea that Thanksgiving dinner should be served at.....NOON

The last time I hosted, I had to get up at 4am to get started. This year, I decided to blow off that idea. I ordered a cooked turkey from our local supermarket which will only require two hours cooking time. And I'm only having to do the sides personally. I told hubby to tell his entire family to not dare show up before noon and dinner will be served about 1pm. I figure since I'm hosting, I dictate when dinner time is :D

His family is so weird when it comes to Thanksgiving. They'll show up chompping at the bit for food, they eat and are gone within an hour of the food hitting the table, pausing only to pack up some leftovers to take with them. IMHO, it's hardly worth the bother of doing all the cooking.

The main reason they do this is because that's when MIL and SIL want to hit the stores for early sales. It's like their family tradition...woof food down and shop for the rest of the day!

That's why I want to keep it simple. I'd like to have a nice meal, but I'm not going to bend over backwards over it.

What I usually do is: drain most of the juice, place them in a pyrex casserole baking dish, cut the larger chunks in half, add brown sugar (dark or light - whichever I have on hand), add butter, add crushed pineapple and put the dish in the oven at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. Then, I cover the top with marshmallows; place back in the oven until the marshmallows are golden brown. My DDs love it.

Ahh.....if you're talking about Thanksgiving dinner, best to do the marshmallow thing. People expect it.

Did y'all know that there's a difference between Yams and Sweet Potatoes, and there's both yellow and orange sweet potatoes and there's a difference between them too? :)

(and sweet potatoes aren't really potatoes?)

For all I know PCMCIA adapters could be some type of sweet potato but I don't think the others are tasty tidbits, not even the gossip kind. :D
